The Call
On a Wednesday morning, the phone at PCPL rings and an anxious voice at the other end enquires,
“Hello, is this PCPL? I am calling as I heard that you can provide us a solution. Can you please help us?”
It was a well-renowned global company who wanted us to provide a customized solution.
The Challenge
The request was for a SPM (Special Purpose Machine) with marking capabilities, which could mark 10 lakh components/month. What made it more complicated was that the marking was to be done on an impeller wheel nose that had a mere area of 6mm. The marking matrix was a petite 2.5mm by 2.5mm consisting of a hearty 18 characters. No they were not done, they not only had to scan but also verify the code.
The Solution
We all know that this kind of verification gets taxing because the marking quality has to be increased by 33% compared to the average marking systems, but again, who is ever happy with average! After hours of brainstorming, followed by design and development, we arrived at the solution which would make the client happy.
Talking about increase, we enhanced the automation, feasibility and accuracy by 30%. If this wasn’t enough we achieved the code verification in terms of A and B. True, marking on casting was tough and scanning made it even more laborious. A cycle time of a slender 9 seconds was achieved where it usually takes 20-30 seconds.
